San Marcos runs along Highway 78, connecting to I5 and I 15. Plans are underway for a commuter train to connect Oceanside on the west to Escondido on the east, allowing better access to the city’s education center, a community college and California State University. Downtown San Diego is 25 miles to the south, and Encinitas is nine miles west, on the coast. Jobs are easily found along Highway 78 and close by at Mirimar Air station, Oceanside Marine base, and at Carlsbad’s busy airport, a heavily trafficked single runway. San
Marcos is one of the fastest growing communities in the county, with a
big boom in the 1990s bringing current population to over 63,000.
San Marcos schools and recreation are a priority for this city, with almost 30 percent of its residents under age 18. Many young families are attracted by the affordability and community San Marcos offers. With a $22 million bond, schools were built, renovated, and converted to be more modernized and spacious. Another high school is scheduled to be built in 2005. Palomar College, CSU, offers courses to students of all ages, looking for degrees or simply seeking further education. Lectures, exhibits and plays all contribute to the public culture, as do the school’s many aerobic courses. Even high school students are studying advanced subjects in this college setting. Children’s activities include soccer, softball, dance, karate, gymnastics, and Little League. Shopping
spills over to the east into Escondido, which shares a shopping mall
with San Marcos. All standard warehouse stores are within or are close
by. Lake San Marcos resides on the
western border of the city offering water sports and two golf courses.
The city currently has eight local parks but plans are underway for a
total of 24 parks.

Only
just over half of the city’s suitable land has been developed, giving
San Marcos plenty of room to grow.
Planning and building have already begun for one of the largest home
developments in the history of San Diego County.
The community of San Elijo hills will grow
to 3,400 homes on 2,000 acres over the next ten years and will be
situated in the hills behind Lake San Marcos. Existing San Marcos real
estate consists of many middle-class neighborhoods, some resembling a
Mediterranean style, and all well maintained. Mobile homes account for
about 12 percent of area housing.
Community
activities include an annual Sunflower County Fair and a chili cook-off.
The active resident will enjoy several basketball courts, a large public
gym, and a local Boys and Girls Club. Other services include a Kaiser
outpatient clinic, library, community center, miniature golf, and a
performing arts center in neighboring Escondido.
